What is an influencer?
The first influencers in the history of influencer marketing can be traced back to the early 20th century. In the 1920s, there were only a few brands on the market shaping the product-centered marketing 1.0. Brands of this market created personas to trigger the purchase decisions of consumers emotionally.
Santa Claus is probably the most popular figure in the history of influencer marketing at least in western countries. The bearded, cuddly man we know today was made up by Coca-Cola and is far more than just a single-brand influencer by now. Another well-known character is Tony the Tiger, who graces Kellogg’s packaging.
In today’s day and age, people automatically think “Instagram” and “Followers” but the concept of “influencing” has been around a long time from celebrity endorsement, to smaller more localized examples such as promo models, and promoters. The concept is that a person has the personality, looks. or talents to earn respect amongst an audience that will exhibit purchase behavior based on what the “icon” they look up to displays.
Today’s modern influencer has mastered the art of building an audience using a public platform such as Instagram, Snapchat, or Tick Tock. But, while many are great at building that following and engagement, many are not great at building the basics to a successful business – website, branding, marketing/advertising, accounting, leveraging technology for automation and efficiency.
Icon Influential began as just a marketing strategy for influencer trips powered by my travel agency Prive Travels. After mentoring a few of my friends that were influencers on how to take a more business approach to their “influencing”, I realized I had a lot of knowledge that I could share to help other influencers be more successful and make money while doing what they love.
